TrueHello Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

InaneSwine After a promising beginning for the franchise with two exhilarating and frightening films, REC 3 threw the biggest cinematic spanner into the works like no other film franchise I have ever witnessed. After that, I knew that REC 4 couldn't possibly be any worse. So it has that going for it.REC 4 certainly is an improvement, but it's still a disappointment. What it wisely does is ditch the found-footage style completely, as opposed to the third film's disorientating switch partway through. The "comic" elements from the third film still unfortunately linger in bits and pieces, though the overall dark mood of the film works in its favour.Yet the film doesn't seem to know what to do with itself, its plot or its characters (a warm welcome back to Manuela Velasco, by the way), and ends up being a bizarre amalgam of other sources. It's like Captain Phillips crossed with Braindead. And by the time the ending does arrive, I had sort of already wished the ship would just blow up, and bury the last of the franchise at sea where it belongs.It's an okay film, but it exists as a patchy attempt to crawl back onto the rails. For what has been billed as the final REC film, it is most unsatisfying.

morrison-dylan-fan After finding my nerves to get torn apart by the first 2 films in the Rec series,I was disappointed to find the third to be a painfully unfunny Comedy.Getting set to do my 1000th IMDb review,I decided that it was time to see the ending of the Rec series.The plot:Waking up after being taken out of an apartment block filled with zombies, Ángela Vidal finds herself with the handful of other survivors on a ship.Trying to make sense of the new location, Ángela discovers that the ship has been taken over by the military,who are keeping it safe in order for the scientist to find a cure for the zombie outbreak at a secure location. Feeling safe due to being miles from land, Ángela and everyone else on the ship soon discover that the zombie outbreak can cross the pond.View on the film:Wrapping up the series,the screenplay by co-writer/(along with Manu Díez) director Jaume Balagueró keeps the action locked on the ship,which along with allowing the threads from the series to be joined up,also gives the title an uneasy atmosphere,as the rough waves are joined by ravenous zombies. Sketching out a clear outline to the cause of the zombie outbreak in the first 3 films,the writers horribly destroy everything that was at the very centre of the terror in the films,by changing the threat into something much less complex and easier to defeat,and also packing the film with extremely ill-judge,childish comedy (stir fried monkey!)Completely getting rid of the franchises trademark "Found Footage" appearance for the final,director Balagueró & cinematographer Pablo Rosso give the title a slick,glossy shine,which fully shows all the tight corridors in the (partly) shot on location ship,and the look of terror sinking deep into Ángela's (played by a very good, returning to the series Manuela Velasco) eyes.Despite having a real location, Balagueró completely drains the film of any claustrophobia or horror by opening up the long corridors of the ship in a wide, crisp presentation,that leads to the unfolding zombie nightmare feeling oddly "safe",which along with some of the ships timber being used for some shockingly poor CGI animal zombies (!) leads to this being a (Rec)ording that should have been stopped a long time ago.

CinemaClown The fourth & final instalment in the REC franchise, REC 4: Apocalypse concludes the horror that began in 2007 with REC, which still remains one of the scariest horror flicks ever made, was followed by an inferior yet effective sequel in 2009 before hitting an absolute low with a needless third entry that was more a spin-off than a sequel and replaced the nerve-racking tension of the first two films with elements of comedy to serve as a parody of the series.With REC 4, the tense & claustrophobic atmosphere of the first two films makes its return & so does the ever-adorable Manuela Velasco. Set right after the events of REC 2, the story of REC 4: Apocalypse follows Ángela Vidal who after being rescued from the doomed building is taken to a ship, that's miles off the shore, for further examination. However, things are set in motion when a test subject escapes from the lab and ends up infecting the ship crew.Co-written & directed by Jaume Balagueró, REC 4 discards the found footage style that was so expertly employed in the first film and replaces it with conventional photography but with that, the effectiveness of those chaotic, frenzy camera-work also diminishes. It still uses the shaky cam technique but it fails to recreate the same chilling vibe of the original. The story isn't compelling enough for a final chapter and what Balagueró has done with Ángela's arc is just absurd.Despite picking up the story from where it left off in the second chapter, REC 4 spends too much time in setting up its premise by introducing characters no one gives a damn about, and even when the terror begins, it's all poorly executed. The scares are cheap & ineffective and the film as a whole feels more like a generic action flick than a visceral horror. It's good to have Manuela Velasco back but her character undergoes a sudden transition which never works in the film's favour.On an overall scale, REC 4: Apocalypse is definitely a step up when compared to the turd that was REC 3: Genesis, is similar in look & tone to the first two chapters of the franchise and although by no means it is a fulfilling conclusion of the series, there is no denying that it could've been much worse. Failing to completely tie up all the loose ends, leaving a few questions unanswered and utterly devoid of any scares, REC 4 may not be a total disaster but it's still finishes as a forgettable finale.

begob Survivors of a zombie-ish infestation are quarantined on a ship, but the infestation follows them. How will they escape? Conventional all-action conclusion to a horror series that drew its strength from a lot of shouting in hand-held POV scenes in a confined space: "Vamos! Vamos! Vamos!". This time the space is a ship, which is a good idea, but the POV is objective so it's a standard treatment.The outstanding thing about the original was the truly creepy ending, but none of the sequels really addressed that mystery. This time they had a go, but it's more sci-fi than creepy.It's well produced, the acting is fine, pace is slow early on with too much dialogue, and the logistics of the ship are not convincing eg. why doesn't the military-medical team lock the whole thing down, instead of letting people wander around? Why does the captain let strangers on his bridge?The music is your usual, unimaginative action stuff, and the sub-titles I got were like a google translation from Spanish to German to English, "as she is spoken".Rec 2 was a pale imitation of Rec 1, Rec 3 had nothing to do with 1 & 2, and Rec 4 tried to wrap things up but in a completely different style. In the end, the final sequence in Rec 1 is the only takeaway from the series.
